We recently had the opportunity to host a hands-on session as part of ENGage LSU 2026, an outreach event organized by the Louisiana State University College of Engineering that introduces middle school students to the exciting world of engineering.
Held in Patrick F. Taylor Hall, the event welcomed nearly 150 students from schools across South Louisiana. Throughout the day, students rotated through a variety of interactive stations, exploring how engineering helps solve real-world problems: from robotics and materials to energy systems and biomedical technologies.
As part of the program, we led a session titled: “Building the Future: A Hands-on Exploration of Construction and Technology.”
During the session, students explored how emerging technologies are transforming the construction industry. They had the opportunity to:
See construction robots in action and learn how robotics can assist in building processes
Experience virtual reality (VR) as a tool for construction education and training
Participate in hands-on activities using interactive tools and toys to explore engineering concepts
One of the most rewarding parts of the event was witnessing the students' curiosity and excitement. Questions ranged from how robots help construction workers to how VR can simulate construction sites. Their enthusiasm was a great reminder that engineering, at its core, is about creativity, problem-solving, and building a better future.
Programs like ENGage LSU play an important role in introducing young students to STEM fields early, helping them see that engineering is not only accessible but also impactful. By giving students the chance to interact with real technologies and researchers, events like this can spark interests that shape future careers.
It was a pleasure to contribute to this initiative and to share a glimpse of how technology and innovation are shaping the future of construction.
